How It All Started

Getting Saucy is the Arc of the Low Country’s (ALC) annual fundraiser and also South Carolina's first and only small vendor barbecue sauce competition, where the sauce is the determining ingredient in crowning the vendor as barbecue sauce champion.

In February of 2022, Brandon Close, Grant Maddox, and Bernard Johnson met at the West Edge Harbor Club's New Member meeting.
After their initial introductions, where they realized they all had roots in Chicago, Brandon began relating his recent experience at Charleston’s local wine-tasting competition, which he had attended the previous week. During that conversation, he expressed his wish that such a competition existed for small business barbecue sauce vendors. The caveat was that he couldn’t be the sponsor because he wanted to enter his product. Both Grant and Bernard laughed and joked, saying that it sounded like a Chicago setup program.

The conversation didn’t die because Bernard suggested that the event become a fundraising event for the Arc of the Low Country, and we all agreed, marveling at the idea of a two-hour networking event becoming the foundational fundraiser for ALC. Over the next two weeks, many hours were spent refining the concept and identifying key persons to be a part of the leadership team. We determined the competition would work based on ALC supplying 1-ounce servings of pulled pork. We shredded chicken for the attendees to sample the vendor's sauces and vote for their fan favorite, while a panel of judges declared the grand champion of the event. Everything was set except for the focal point of the project. What should we title the event?

The issue was resolved when three women happened to pass our regular meeting and asked what was going on. We explained the project and how we were searching for the right hook for the event. One of the women jokingly said, "Sounds like some people are going to be getting saucy, no pun intended." Everyone turned and smiled because “ Getting Saucy” was happening.
